4.2.1 Demographic Characteristics of Student Respondents
This study was conducted in 28 secondary schools in Busia County. A total of 364 students
were sampled from boys, girls and co-educational secondary schools to participate in the study.
The data was categorical and items 1-3 in part A of appendix III required the respondents to
indicate their gender, age and the type of school. Thesecharacteristics were employed as control
variables on data analysis with multinomial logistic regression. The characteristicsare explained
in the conceptual framework.The results on demographic characteristics are presented in Table
4.1.

It can be discerned from Table 4.1 that the sample consisted of 182 (50%) male students and
182(50%) female students.
Most of the respondents were aged between 18-19 (41.3%) and 16-
17 (39.7%) years. This implies that students complete form four class between the ages of 17-19
years. Table 4.1 also indicate that student respondents 190 (52.3%) were from co-educational
public secondary schools as compared to those from girls' 98 (27.0%) and boys' 76 (20.7%)
