Introduction The study I have chosen to write about is "A Social Identity Perspective of Social Media's Impact on Satisfaction with Life." This study focused on social media and its effects on a person's life. The purpose of this study was to focus and understand on socials medias positive and negative effects on individual and different age groups. The second purpose was to find out whether it causes a type of addiction and if it has effects on mental health and if people are at risk if they aren't already. In the article is states " The current research thus seeks to understand the impacts of social media addiction, fear of missing out (FoMO) and narcissism on SwL and the role of self‐esteem in those relations." (Dutot, V. (2020). For this research I looked at the different in ages to see if youth are more suspectable than older generations and to see who it affects more. I also looked at the different between people having a social media presence and people who do not and if they have any FOMO like people who are on social media. In the article it stated "the demographics of the respondents were skewed slightly, with more male (52.3%) than female (47.7%) participants. In addition, the respondents were aged primarily between 26 and 35 years old (43.1%), followed by 36-49 years old (30.8%), and 19-25 years old (18.4%)" (Dutot, V. (2020).
Analysis For this research they used an online survey to get their results, this was an empirical study. An online survey method was used and as well for its three major principals. Those three reasons are first the survey is currently accepted as a tool for research, then "such methods of collection are faster, more straightforward and cost‐effective and finally the period of collection is reduced, while instructions can be added if necessary" (Dutot, 2020)." The measures for this survey were determined by their reliability, validity and relevance to the research. "SwL was measured in accordance with research by Diener et al. Collective self‐esteem (CSES) was adapted from Luhtanen and Crocker and individual self‐esteem (SSES) was defined based on the Rosenberg scale." (Dutot, 2020)." For the survey they administrated to 10 people who were a part of a group for social media professionals. This study was also conducted over a period of 5 weeks and data was collected through different social media, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook. They had to assume that "self- esteem development is the key to SwL once joining and using social media. They hypothesize the following: H3a: Narcissism will positively influence collective self-esteem, H3b: Narcissism will positively influence individual self-esteem, H4a: Collective self-esteem will positively influence SwL and H4b: Collective self0esteem will positively influence SwL. The results of this study show the impact of "the dark side" of social media on self- Esteem. The results also show "the importance of CSES on both SSES and SWL (Dutot, 2020)". Based on the results, their conclusion that "this study has identified key components of determinants of SwL in a social media context" is accurate. They did have some limitations that they had stated that could give more accurate results if it was fixed such as adding more
