APPROVAL SHEET A. SDG#5: Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment B. Chosen Contested Issue in the Philippine Context: Gender-Based Violence C. Why is it a contested issue? Explain all conflicting angles or perspectives. (I need to see at least two in-text citations here.) 1.The Philippines ranks as one of the most gender-equal nations in the Western Pacific region. Twenty-five percent of Filipino women have encountered gender-based violence, and 41% of these victims choose not to seek assistance (Valdez et al., 2022). Despite legal regulations and a prevalent local movement against violence targeting women, numerous obstacles prevent victims from seeking help. These challenges are primarily rooted in the Philippines' economic, sociopolitical, and cultural frameworks, which hinder women affected by violence from accessing the support they need. As per (Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Response, 2019), one out of every twenty women and girls between the ages of 15 and 49 has been a victim of sexual violence during their lifetime. Strengthening the implementation of laws and policies such as the Magna Carta of Women will be crucial to safeguarding women and preventing such incidents from occurring in the future. 2.On the other side of the issue, given that there is gender-based violence against women, according to critics, some suggest that the victims of gender-based
violence are responsible for the abuse they have experienced. Hence, (Philippine Commission on Women, 2022) Women are often blamed for domestic abuse, labeled as "naggers," or accused of neglecting their wifely duties, which supposedly justifies their spouses' violent behavior. Similarly, victims of rape might face blame due to their perceived "flirtatious" behavior. Additionally, when women report sexual harassment at work, their claims can be dismissed as malicious intent based on their physical appearance. D. Your stance: Living in a patriarchal society, I firmly believe that the government must strengthen the implementation of stricter laws and penalties for the perpetrators.
