Applying the Sociological Imagination Some Examples of Sociological Research Methods from Macionis 2011: Dr. Trichur
Introductory A Research Method is a systematic plan for doing research. Experiments, Surveys, Participant Observation, and the Use of Existing Historical Sources, are 4 commonly used Research Methods in Sociology.
I: The Experimental Method: Zimbardo's (1972) Stanford County Prison Experiment Zimbardo's Experimental Method begins with a big "why" Question: Why is there so much violence in Prisons ? Why are Prisons violent settings ? Is it because Prisoners are violent people? Is it because Guards are violent people? Or is Prison Violence a result of the Prison-Setting itself? Does the inherently violent nature of the Prison Setting produce Violent Behavior as an outcome? To address this question, Zimbardo devised the 'Stanford County Prison' in 1971, in the basement of the Psychology Department at Paolo Alto, Stanford (CA). His results were published in 1972.
