Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation Research Chyna Coulanges Master of Social Work, Walden University SOCW 6210: Human Behavior and the Social Environment II Dr. Aileen McCabe-Maucher October 1 st , 2023
2 Summary Of Your Findings Regarding Gender Identity or Sexual Orientation In the study, Integrated Behavioral Health and Counseling Gender and Sexual Minority Populations , the primary emphasis is on the milestones experienced by persons who identify as LGBTQ, and it investigates the possible psychological and emotional repercussions that may develop as a result of the timing of these milestones or the lack of these milestones. Milestones for transgender people may include coming to terms with their differences, embracing a transgender identity, building a life that fits the gender they identify with, and seeking medical interventions to support their transition (Hereth et al., 2020). In the first and most common stage of gender awareness, people realize that their gender identity does not match the one assigned to them at birth (Jeffry et al., 2022). When individuals find out about this information at a young age, in the vast majority of cases, they are subjected to the accompanying stigmas and rejection, which leads to a greater risk of dealing with social isolation and depression. On the other hand, a study that was carried out by Jeffry and colleagues (2022) discovered that older people exhibited considerably lower levels of depression and thoughts of suicide than younger people did. According to Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman, and Hessenauer (2019), it is possible for people to reach a point in their life trajectories that is similar to Sharon's, which is defined by middle adulthood and during which they go through a process of reflection and reevaluation of their social interactions. This is something that might happen to anybody at any point in their lives. Impact On Life Span Development The article also looked at how an individual's mental health might be affected when their close family members do not accept their gender transition or call them by the name they have selected for themselves. There is a correlation between having insufficient amounts of support and an increased propensity to experience depression. This article provides significant insights into the experiences of individuals who identify as LGBTQ, highlighting the profound impact that the absence of support, recognition, and community can have on their well-being, hindering their ability to lead fulfilling lives
3 and express their true identities. The article also highlights the profound impact that the absence of support, recognition, and community can have on the well-being of individuals who identify as LGBTQ. In spite of this, it is essential to recognize that picking one of these two aspects to prioritize is often a difficult decision to make. How You Might Apply Your Findings to Social Work Practice According to the National Association of Social Workers (2021), the primary goal of social workers within the social work profession is to improve the overall well-being of people and to contribute to the fulfillment of the basic human needs of all people. This particular subject, along with its findings, is pertinent to social work on several levels, including macro, meso, and micro levels. People who identify as members of the LGBTQ community have access to additional advocacy opportunities thanks to the awareness that exists about the lack of support, community, and representation in their communities. It is feasible to put our beliefs about social justice and service to others into action on a larger scale (NASW, 2021). In order to get results that are representative of the United States' population as a whole and its demographic make-up, it is necessary to improve the inclusiveness of the process through which surveys, questionnaires, and other similar instruments are filled out. In addition, it is very necessary to advocate for and actively seek policies and laws that promote diversity and defend the ideals of justice. An examination of the different sexual orientations and gender identities, expressed as a proportion of the total population, was provided in the aforementioned article. Because there is a possibility of distortion and because there are still stigmas involved with coming out, the reliability of these results may be called into question. Personally, I'm interested in becoming a therapist someday, and that's one of my goals to achieve in the area of social work overall.
