A crime that is quickly becoming rampant in society is elder abuse. The elderly are a class that has significant risk of physical, emotional and psychological abuse, neglect, financial exploitation and abandonment. Even more unsettling are the people who take advantage of the elderly and commit the aforementioned infractions. While con men and Internet scams propose a valid threat, often times, it is a family member or trusted caretaker that takes the most advantage or commits the worst abuse. Several agencies have joined forces to combat elder abuse. The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), AARP, and the National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) are working together in an effort to reduce elderly victimization. While this is a positive effort in the right direction, others feel as though the lower courts need to do a more proactive job in regulating who is granted guardianship over the elderly. Some suggest that requiring background and/or credit checks of the caretaker would lower the risk and reduce the chances of abuse by a trusted relationship.
