Methodology Introduction The current section of the research provides a detailed outline of the methods and techniques for data collection and analysis. The section is based on the Research Onion model developed by Saunders (2012), which is a layered approach to research methodology. The study shall apply a quantitative research methodology to answer the research question, improve clarity, and provide a deeper understanding of the topic of interest and the research objectives. Based on the research onion model, the section describes the study philosophy, the approach, the strategy, time horizon, and data collection and analysis. The different components of the model as related to the study are discussed as below; Fig 1: The Research Onion Model Research Philosophy
The primary objective of the research study is to examine the benefits and barriers of financial education for women from both an individual and structural perspective, and how financial education initiatives affect the financial knowledge, behaviour and attitudes of women. Against this background, the research study shall adopt a pragmatic philosophy which emphasizes the practical use of knowledge and the need to solve real-life problems (Kaushik & Walsh, 2019). As a research philosophy, pragmatism uses the existing knowledge to improve people's lives and focuses on finding practical solutions to a specific societal problem (Kaushik & Walsh, 2019). In the study, the philosophy shall be applicable in understanding practical and concrete solutions to the barriers associated with access to financial education for women and how existing knowledge can be used to improve their financial knowledge, behaviour and attitudes. Based on the pragmatic philosophy, the study design shall incorporate operational decisions based on the most appropriate techniques to find solutions for the research questions while enabling innovation and dynamism in the research. Research Approach The second layer of the research onion model describes the overall strategy and the plan of action of the research. Based on the research design, the study shall adopt a deductive approach which shall involve the development of a hypothesis and testing it through collection and analysis of data (Chatfield, 2022). The research approach shall employ a top-down model where the researcher shall develop three general hypotheses associated with the topic of research. To effectively employ the deductive research approach, the researchers shall first read existing theory on the benefits and barriers of financial education for women, to develop a deductive argument for the creation of the research hypotheses (Olsson, 2022). Based on the existing theories and the established hypotheses, the researchers shall create a set of codes applicable to
the research topic for development of the data collection instrument. However, it is important to note that the research shall not incorporate any alternative hypothesis and shall only focus on the null hypotheses. Research Strategy With each layer of the onion model building on the preceding one to create a comprehensive research methodology, the research strategy of the study shall be based upon the research philosophy and the adopted approach. To this end, the study shall adopt a survey strategy which is built upon the pragmatic philosophy and the deductive approach. The survey strategy uses a variety of tools including self-reports and questionnaires to identify and study the variables of interest (Atikcan et al., 2021). The researchers shall develop a survey questionnaire to ask the study participants about their thoughts, feelings and behaviors, in relation to the topic of research (Atikcan et al., 2021). The questionnaire shall have multiple survey questions with dummy data and shall be divided into four sections. The first section shall focus on questions associated with the demographic characteristics of the participants and the second section shall focus on questions associated with benefits and barriers of financial education. The third section of the questionnaire shall investigate the gender norms and discrimination associated with financial education while the last section shall focus on the potential limitations of financial education programs and explore alternative strategies to address the structural barriers that prevent women from achieving financial security. The survey shall use close-ended questions with numerically rated items based on a Likert scale of level of agreement. Also, the questionnaire shall be designed to capture all types of responses including dichotomous, nominal, ordinal and the Likert scale-based interval-level responses. The medium
