Meet at the front door of the Raymond Building at 9:35 (Morning groups) /2:35 (Evening groups) to take the bus. Please come wearing sturdy shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather. We will spend THREE HOURS outside, rain or shine. YOU MUST BRING 1. A print-out of this lab handout with few copies of pages 4 and 5, or else a notebook where you will write the relevant information. 2. A clipboard or something hard to support your paper while you write. 3. You may wish to bring a digital camera to photograph the plants we will look at. References for this lab : See references on each of the Plant Group Recognition sheets Learning goals for this lab: ¨ Be able to recognize and name these major groups of terrestrial autotrophic organisms o Cyanobacteria* (photosynthetic prokaryotes) o Eukaryotic* algae o Lichens o Phylum Hepatophyta (Liverworts) o Phylum Bryophyta (Mosses) o Phylum Lycopodiophyta (Lycopods; Club mosses) o Phylum Pteridophyta § Order Equisetales (Horsetails) § Order Filicales (Ferns) o Phylum Coniferophyta (Conifers) o Phylum Anthophyta (Flowering plants) § Class Monocotyledones ("monocots") § Class Eudicotyledones ("dicots") ¨ Name some of the habitats and "lifestyles" where terrestrial plants can be found, and describe the constraints on growth, development and reproduction in that habitat.
