5.1 Introduction 1. Casting is the oldest method of manufacturing, started in about 4000 B.C. to make ornaments, copper arrowheads. 2. Basically, metal- casting processes involve, molten metal, mold cavity, solidification, the metal conforms to the shape of the cavity. 3. Advantages: Very large or very small part size, hollow and internal cavities, making intricate shapes in a single piece. 4. Typical cast products: Engine blocks, crank shafts, pistons, railroad wheels and ornaments artifacts.
