The financial implications of occupational injuries can be quite hefty, depending on the type of injury
sustained.
If the organization does not comply with set standards, they can face a hefty fines and legal fees to
defend their case.
As some of my colleagues have already mentioned, the organization's reputation can also become
compromised, especially if employees go public with the violations. This can trickle into difficult
recruitment (who wants to work at a place that doesn't value safety?), and unstable retention.
Graph outlining total costs of incident type for 2016
This is a graph from 2016 which indicates the type of injury and the cost to my organization for the year.
Post-pandemic, we can expect these numbers to be drastically elevated in keeping with frequent,
unplanned absences and injuries from burn out.
In order to ensure management is aware of health and safety issues, the employee should bring
concerns to their leadership, and escalate these concerns if necessary to the Joint Health and Safety
Committee. At most hospitals, the Joint Health and Safety Committee Participates in developing and
implementing programs to protect the employee's health and safety. They are responsible for:
Promoting programs to improve employee education and training
Participating in all health and safety inquiries and investigations.
