Part A - This Term 1) Your Work Term Mission Earlier in the course, you put together a Work Term Mission as part of Assignment 2. In it, you considered an employer, job, current strengths, and areas for growth. Begin by restating your Work Term Mission, as written in your previous assignment. If you updated your Work Term Mission based on feedback received for Assignment 2, include the updated version as well as a summary of what you improved. By the end of the work term, I will gain experience as a lab worker. I will also find out if this profession is to my liking. By using my strengths and areas for improvement, I will provide support to my team, and better myself in the process. By the end of the work term, I will gain experience as a lab worker and find out if this profession is to my liking. Since this is my first full-time job, I will treat it with the fullest sincerity and dedication. By using my strengths and areas for improvement, such as teamwork, and proper communication techniques, I will provide support to my team, and better myself in the process. *I added one main strength and one area for improvement each, as well as more details for my attitude towards my coop work.* 2) Your Employer Briefly describe your current or chosen employer, including common characteristics you learned about, like the organization size, ownership, operating sector, region, and product types. In your Work Term Mission, you described what you would like to determine about your professional success and enjoyment within such an environment. How did your experience over the term (or your research into a company) support or refute this prediction? Do your conclusions about the employer match your expectations at the time? In your Work Term Mission, you described some specific steps you would take to make such a determination by the end of the term. Were you able to complete these steps? If not, why or how were your actions different than anticipated at the time?
Thinking toward future work terms, what kind of employer would you like to work for next? Consider the common organizational characteristics you learned about in this course. Why would you like to pursue this path? My current employer is a professor at a laboratory. The size of the workgroup is small-scaled at around 20 people. We work on projects that are given to us by sponsoring companies and projects that are self-innovated. This work environment provides minimal stress on the workers, a good amount of freedom in working hours, and minimal restraint on self-determined work. Having worked for a little over two months at this job, I am feeling confident in the work-specific skills that I have developed over this period. This work environment was more or less similar to what I had in mind. The work was very independently based, and whilst there are others around to help, personal growth was vital for success in daily work. I enjoy this independent space a lot because of my personality. This job has been a perfect fit for me. I was able to complete the mentioned steps. I treated this job with my full attention and was able to learn a lot of new things from it. I expected to take a liking to this working environment and it came as no surprise that I was able to excel. For my future work terms, I would like to work under different types of employers. Different employers will have different interests and personalities. Since I was unable to meet my current employer a lot of times, I would appreciate a boss who would spend his time bonding with his employees. I would like to pursue this path because I feel that this way, work efficiency will increase and the general mood in the workspace would also improve. 3) Your Role Briefly describe your current role, including job title, tasks, and responsibilities. Describe what did you do day-to-day and any projects you worked on. If you were not employed this term, reiterate the job type you decided to investigate. In your Work Term Mission, you described what you would like to determine about your professional success and enjoyment within such a role. How did your experience over the term support or refute this prediction? Do your conclusions about your current or chosen job match your expectations at the time? In your Work Term Mission, you also described some specific steps you would take to make such a determination by the end of the term. Were you able to work on or complete these steps? If not, why or how were your actions different than anticipated at the time? Thinking toward future work terms, what kind of job would you like to try next? Why would you like to pursue this path?
I currently work as a research assistant in a small group of 5 people. My responsibility in the group is to assist in experimentations, and present collected data and summaries of our findings to the entire lab. Our daily activities include reading academic papers related to our research as well as in-lab experimentations. The main project that we work on is a water filtration application system (foam) built using sustainable materials (wood fiber). It is a new application that has not been tested and is still in its early stages of development. Another project I worked on was a vaccine project based on adjuvants. I conducted particle size testing on prehomogenized and post-homogenized adjuvants and presented the data to the sponsoring company. I accepted this role initially because of the creative background that my employer Professor Tam had for sustainable materials. I sincerely enjoy working in this hands-on environment because of the feeling of accomplishment of succeeding in daily quotas. My experience over the term mirrored my expectations of this job and I was able to extract personal growth, as well as work in a team-based environment on interesting projects. Throughout the work term, I was able to rack up experiences and new skills. I was also able to complete some steps that I mentioned in my work term mission. However, I feel that there is a lack of development in my communication skills. Since the job is highly reliant on self-dependency, I was not able to fully grasp the ins and outs of professional communication. For my future work terms, I would like to branch out toward other types of employers and working environments. Some examples would be a typical desk job or an on-site engineer. Since there would probably be a strict schedule, it would urge me to keep to a healthy daily routine, which would also better me in my personal life. I would like to pursue these jobs to gain experience in different fields and working spaces so I can figure out my "true calling" (what is most comfortable for me). Part B - You 4) Strengths List the personal strengths you selected as a primary focus during Assignment 2. Remember that at least one strength should be related to a professional/soft skill. For each strength, answer the following questions: In what ways did you use this strength during the term? Did using this strength directly benefit your employer in the way you expected (if applicable)? Did you achieve your goals of developing your strength further? Did you reach the specific accomplishments that you sought? How did you develop your strength further? What resources did you use? In Assignment 2, you wrote an objective to determine if you successfully achieved your goal. Did you meet this objective?
