2 Discussion What would you like to see in a President? President being the chief executive, carries a lot of responsibilities. I would like to see the following in President. First, I expect the President to be a political leader. The President should be able to lead the country politically. Being the chief executive officer president should oversee all activities in government and the whole country. Also, the President should be diplomatic, meaning he or she should be able to deal with others in a sensitive and tactful way without forcing them and be a symbol of national unity . Finally, the President should be able to initiate reasonable legislation and give executive orders to direct and shape the country positively. Which Presidents would you consider to be positive, and which ones would be negative? Presidents Harry Truman and Barack Obama are both positive presidents in my opinion. Harry Truman was well-known for his simple and decisive leadership style. "The buck stops here," as one famous remark ascribed to him, signifies that he accepted full responsibility for the actions taken during his leadership. "I can't compel them to say yes," Truman said, reflecting his respect for the division of powers and the checks and balances built into the American democratic system. He did not have the ability as President to tell Congress or other departments of government what they should or should not do (Thomas, nd). Instead, he had to work within the system to get support for his programs and develop agreements. Barack Obama, on the other hand, enacted a variety of programs and initiatives targeted at addressing the United States' economic issues. He aimed to transform the economy in several ways, including signing the $787 billion Economic Stimulus Bill and adopting the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Alternatively, I consider Donald trump a negative president. Some of the reasons for my decision is the way he came up with controversial policies. For instance, reversing
3 already set policies on immigration. Trump has been criticized for his speech and actions, which some say has led to the country's growing political divisiveness and social tensions (Dickerson, 2018). Trump often attacked the media hence undermining the freedom of the press and the role of a free press in a democratic society. Through the above practices, Trump broke the office and can be considered a negative president.
