In the last unit, we learned about vision, mission, and values. In this unit, the text states: "...a
strategy captures and communicates how vision and mission will be achieved and which goals
and objectives show that the organization is on the right path to achieving them" (Carpenter et.
al., 2010). What negative consequences can emerge when vision, mission, or values contradict
strategy? Name a time when you believe strategy was not aligned with vision, mission, or values.
How can leaders ensure that strategy matches the vision, mission, and values?
When the vision, mission, or values of an organization contradict its strategy, it can lead to
confusion and uncertainty among employees, as well as a lack of trust and credibility among
stakeholders. This can lead to a lack of focus and direction, as well as a lack of commitment to
the organization's goals and objectives. (Carpenter et. al., 2010).
One example of a time when the strategy was not aligned with vision, mission, or values was the
2008 financial crisis. Many banks and financial institutions pursued profit-driven strategies that
prioritized short-term gains over long-term stability and sustainability. This led to a lack of
alignment between their strategies and the values of integrity and responsibility, which ultimately
contributed to the collapse of the global financial system.
To ensure that strategy matches the vision, mission, and values of the organization, leaders need
to be actively involved in the strategy development process. They should ensure that the
organization's vision, mission, and values are clearly defined and understood by everyone in the
organization. They should also involve employees in the strategy development process, and
make sure that everyone is committed to and invested in the organization's goals and objectives.
Additionally, leaders should regularly review and assess the alignment between strategy and
vision, mission, and values, and adjust as needed. (Carpenter et. al., 2010).
