Podcast Assignment Overall Instructions: This assignment will require you to listen to a podcast and complete the presentation note and be prepared to talk about your podcase for 10 minutes to the class. There is an outline to help you with your thoughts, but you can expand from that sheet. Each presentation will be unique and there will be no duplicate topics. As a result, there is a sign-up sheet for the podcasts chosen. This assignment will review different sciences used in forensics as well as opposing views of its worth. There are a number of podcasts pre-selected that a student will present on and others will have a choice to pick their own case. The sign-up sheet is a first-come, first serve format. Review the sign-up sheet, the pre-selected podcasts under the "Wrongful Convictions" podcast and any case in the podcast "Forensic Tales", so you are totally familiar with the choices. After reviewing the choices, please sign-up for presentation topic. You will also be required to take notes on each presentation. There is a pre-made sheet will also help you with taking the important notes. This sheet is only there as an aid for note taking and it is up to you to take complete notes. Keep a sheet for each presentation made as you will have to refer back to it towards the end of sem. After all presentations are complete, then you will write a self-reflection essay on what you learned about forensic science in the criminal justice system. Sign-up: Due by 3/2/23 In class, review the sign-up sheet, the pre-selected podcasts under the "Wrongful Convictions" podcast and the cases in the podcast "Forensic Tales", so you are totally familiar with the choices. After reviewing the choices, please sign-up for presentation topic and time slot. Podcast Assignment Due May 2, 2023 (before class) (20 points) Listen to your chosen podcast. Be prepared to talk to the class on you podcast for 10 minutes. This is not a formal presentation and no power points are needed. It will be an informal discussion, but you have to know your podcast in detail. You will have to submit the presentation notes sheet for your podcast to the assignment box in Brightspace. The notes for your podcase will be in typed full sentences and paragraphs, in APA style, so the teacher (I) will have a complete understanding of the podcast that you listened to. This is an informal writing assignment, but APA rules still follow. Forensic Tales Podcast: The presentation will discuss the overall facts of the case (tell us what the case is about), discuss the investigative steps (how did the police figure it out) and discuss the forensics used in the case. Be sure to identify any significant barriers in the case. Also include the outcome of the case. If the investigation should/could have in a different direction, then discuss that as well.
Wrongful Conviction Podcast: Summarize the podcast, the issues presented, history if appropriate, the different perspective on the science and conclude with your opinion. Refer to the rubric for minimum requirements and grading. Class Discussion: May 2, 2023 & May 4, 2023: (20 points each class) Class will be broken up into two small groups each day to facilitate discussion about each podcast. You will have to take notes on each student's case, because you will need to refer back to them for your reflection essay. The notes you take will not be handed in and only used for your reference. There will be a lot of information, so make sure that you take adequate notes. The groups will be broken up, so that each one will have successful cases to discuss and wrongful convictions to discuss. The sides will switch the next class, so that everyone has a chance to hear about every podcast listened to in class. Refer to the rubric for minimum requirements and grading. Reflection Essay: Due date May 9, 2023 (before class): (20 points) Essay will be a minimum of 2-pages and it will be a reflection of what you learned about forensics during your presentation, other student presentations and class work throughout the system. Discuss at least two different forensic technologies that you learned and your opinion about its value in the criminal justice system. It will be completed before class on May 9 th , 2023, as you will informally share what you learned with the class. Refer to the rubric for minimum requirements and grading.
