Thurgood Marshall Thurgood Marshall was born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 2, 1908. Thurgood's original name was spelled Thoroughgood, he shortened his name to Thurgood in the second grade. His mom was a teacher. In school, Thurgood often got into trouble for misbehaving. He loved to argue and often visited the 6 6 local courthouse to listen to law cases with his dad. ( Because of this, Thurgood wanted to become a lawyer. i Thurgood attended college at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. After graduating, Thurgood wanted to \ attend law school at the University of Maryland, however, they wouldn't let him in because he was African American. Instead, Thurgood went to law school at Howard University and graduated in year 1933. After graduating law school, Thurgood opened his own law office in Baltimore, Maryland. One of his first big cases was against the University of Maryland (the school L J Thurgood wanted to attend). In 1935, Thurgood took the University to court and won. Now the University of Maryland would have to let African Americans attend college there. This was the beginning of Thurgood's passion for civil rights. Thurgood's most famous case came in 1954. It was called Brown VS. Board of Education. Thurgood argued that schools should not be segregated. Back then, there was a school for black children, and a separate school for white children. Thurgood won his case that changed the law that made it possible for both black and white children to attend school together and not be separate. In 1961 Thurgood became a judge on the United States Court of Appeals. Then on August 30, 1967, Thurgood became the first African American Supreme Court Judge. A Supreme Court Judge is the highest ranking court and judge in the United States. Thurgood was famous for fighting for individual rights. Making sure it was fair for everyone. Thurgood died January 24, 1993 in Bethesda, Maryland.
