Fall 2023 - ECON 580 Prospectus is due September 28, 2023, at 10:00 PM 1 Assignment # 4 (Descriptive Analysis) Please submit this assignment via Gradescope in PDF format. This assignment involves both group and individual contributions. The group size is 2-3. Designate one group member to submit the assignment on behalf of the group, ensuring that all group members are listed in the Gradescope. At the beginning of the assignment, please make sure to indicate the contribution of each group member. Treat this assignment as an academic essay with graphs, equations, and tables. Make your writing flow with paragraphs logically connected to one another. Attach the log file at the end of the prospectus. Include a paper title. Group Project The goal of this group assignment is to refine the section of the paper dedicated to descriptive analysis. This section will have the following structure: 2. Descriptive Analysis 2.1 Data Overview 2.2 Trends in Key Variables 2.3 Policy/Shock Description 2.4 Summary Statistics Feel free to customize the titles of each subsection as needed to align with the specifics of your project. 2.1 Data Overview 1) As in Assignment#4 (with revisions if necessary), provide an overview of the dataset, including its name, purpose, data collector, data type (cross-sectional, longitudinal), time span, and the number of observations. Clearly define sample constraints, such as age 25-65, urban workers, single mothers, teenagers, etc. Identify both the strengths and limitations of this dataset in the context of your research. - Follow examples of data description from published economics papers.
Fall 2023 - ECON 580 Prospectus is due September 28, 2023, at 10:00 PM 2 2.2 Trends in Key Variables 2) Introduce and describe three key variables: the continuous outcome variable Y, the categorical outcome variable Y, and the binary treatment variable X. Indicate how these variables are measured/constructed. While describing these variables, you do not need to employ formal notations ("Y" and "X"). Here is an example of a continuous variable description: The Household Pulse Survey collects information from respondents regarding their expenditures over the past week on both groceries and prepared meals. [here I recommend citing the exact definition from the questionnaire/codebook] These expenditure measures are divided by an adult equivalence scale, which is calculated to be 1 for the first adult, plus 0.75 for each additional adult, and an additional 0.5 for each child under the age of 18 residing in the household. This adjustment accounts for the presence of economies of scale, where the cost of meal preparation per person decreases as more individuals share a meal. Additionally, food expenditures are adjusted for price inflation using the Food CPI in urban areas, with June 2019 serving as the reference month. 3) As in Assignment#4 (with revisions if necessary), draw figures/maps to visualize each outcome variable (minimum one figure per outcome). Ensure that figures are appropriately labeled with axes and a title. Number each figure and give a title. Describe findings. Examples of figures you may construct: - Trend in Y over time, on average, or by group X (or another group) - Trend in Y over life cycle by group X (or another group) - Map - Histogram (this may work for a categorical variable) - You may come up with other graphic representations of your key variables, but it is not required. You may use figures created in the previous assignment. 2.3 Policy/Shock Description 4) Provide a description of your chosen policy or shock, allocating 1 to 2 paragraphs for this purpose. If you are analyzing a policy, start by outlining its primary objectives and specific provisions. Identify the target groups or demographics that were the primary focus of the policy. Discuss the timeline of the policy, including its initiation, ending, and the various stages of the policy's development. You may also highlight specific states or regions that adopted and implemented this policy, providing illustrative examples. Refer to existing studies that have examined similar policies to provide context for your discussion.
Fall 2023 - ECON 580 Prospectus is due September 28, 2023, at 10:00 PM 3 If your focus is on a shock, such as food inflation or hospitalization, describe this shock throughout the sample period. Provide details on its sources, the extent of geographical variation, potential consequences, and the magnitude of the shock. You can also emphasize specific states or regions that experienced this shock most prominently. For temporal context, pinpoint the time periods when the shock was the most severe. 5) Visualize your policy/shock using the following tools: - Map showing the geographic distribution of your policy/shock variable at a given point in time or over one year. Describe findings in one paragraph. - Timeline of policy using the 'panelview' command in Stata. Describe the timeline for the reader. You may contact Soohyun (Harry) Shin <[email protected]> for help with this visualization. 2.4 Summary Statistics We will work on this subsection later. For now, please display the table containing summary statistics for all variables used in the analysis, including the Z vector of control variables. Exclude state and time fixed effects from the summary statistics table. Make a note of any unusual values or if there is a significant reduction in the sample size for specific variables (if applicable). Individual Project The goal of this individual assignment is to ensure that you have formulated a clear research question and are capable of independently estimating a baseline OLS equation. Please include your name and the title of your individual section. 1. As in Assignment#4 (with revisions if necessary), w rite ½ page introduction with the following components a. "The question" - What is your individual research question? b. "Motivation" - Write a few sentences about why you chose your research question. c. "Value-added" - Describe contributions of the individual part of paper to the group project. 2. Estimate an OLS model related to your research question. Include one interaction term. Report the results using outreg2 in Stata. Summarize preliminary findings.
