Session 1 Approaching a client and starting a case history
interview
In speech pathology practice, the first step to working with a client is to "Investigate and document the
client's communication and/or swallowing condition and explore the primary concerns of the client." We
will work towards this today by looking at how we approach a client and start case history interviews. Our
plan for this session is to:
1.1: Get to know your PPE and each other (you will need to "sign-up" to groups of four to work on
homework and preparation for each week).
1.2 Revise key concepts from first year
1.3 Practice using lay language (sometimes called parent friendly language)
1.4 Watch a case history
1.5 Simulate the start of a case history
For homework you will:
1.6 Reflect on what you learned from this session
1.7 prepare for Week 2.
ACTIVITY 1.1: Meet your Onsite Placement PPE and Student Colleagues and sign-up for
your small groups.
a) Who is your PPE? Briefly describe your PPE's professional background. This might include information
they provide about their experience with particular demographics, work contexts and/or range of practice
areas.
_Bec is in early intervention area (0-6 years) and can also go up into kids getting into school. She works with
a lot of children from commission homes with autism. Help with NDIS support.
b) Who are your Group Preparation colleagues? Write down their names and email addresses:
Nina
