B A 353/653 Internship in Business Assignment #1 353_Assignment1 Page 1 of 3 Completing this assignment will help you will lay groundwork for your current and future job searches. Read Chapters 1 through 4 of the textbook, complete the actions noted below, and insert your answers beneath each of the following questions. Submit your completed file (as a Word doc or pdf) on Canvas. 1. Google yourself. a. Describe the first page of results that actually relate to you. The first three results that relate to me are my LinkedIn, my personal Twitter account that I use to keep up with sports and movies, and old box scores from cricket matches I had played in during high school. The fourth link, and the last link that relates to me, is a high school club that lists me as an officer. All others are not related to me. b. Do the results you found online enhance your brand? Would you hire yourself based on the results you found? Why or why not? I would say the LinkedIn enhances my professional brand; however, the second and third links still enhance my brand as a whole as the sports and movies you find on my Twitter and the sports I play in my free time are all very important to me. These are all integral parts of my personality. I would hire myself based on these results because there is nothing that stands out as a red flag or detracts from me as a candidate. While only the LinkedIn offers professional evidence as to why hiring me would be a good idea, there are potential interests and passion showcased in my Twitter that could also help a recruiter decide on hiring me. c. If you found (or were to find) any information that you would like to have removed, how might you go about removing it? I would first check to see if it was any information from an account of mine, and if so, I would r make it private or delete the account based on the situation. If I had no control, I would then attempt to contact the host of this piece of information to ask them to take it down. d. How might you improve your online profile to make you more desirable to a potential employer? In other words, what steps could you take to expand your professional presence on the internet? One step I can take to expand my professional presence would be to much more active on LinkedIn. I currently only utilize LinkedIn to update my experiences and congratulate my friends for theirs; however, I can expand my network and presence by using it to connect with those in my preferred career field. A second method would be to use my Twitter account in a professional manner as well by following topics related to my career and creating content for this as well. A last method could be creating a portfolio or blog to house all related content and personal works to showcase evidence for potential employers. 2. Following the instructions in the textbook, arrange one 10-minute practice interview with a person in your workplace who shares your enthusiasm for any topic unrelated to work. a. According to the textbook, what is the purpose of a practice (aka pleasure) interview? The purpose of a practice/pleasure interview is to familiarize yourself with being able to simply talk to people just for fun, almost as a warm-up. This is a great way to " penetrate networks " and get to know someone.

We talked about our shared interest in TV shows, specifically shows such as New Girl and Farzi. d. Did you honor your word and limit the discussion to 10 minutes? Why or why not? I limited the discussion to 10 minutes to ensure that I respected her time, and I wanted to make sure she was able to finish the work she had on her schedule. e. Did you achieve the purpose of the interview? State your evidence. I believe I did achieve the purpose of the interview as I was able to learn more about my co- worker and even become friends with her due to this shared interest. f. What method (U.S postal mail, email, text, Slack, etc.) did you employ to send your interviewee a thank-you message? I sent a thank you message via text because all other channels felt too formal for this type of interview. g. What was easy or fun about the practice interview? What was uncomfortable? It was fun getting to know my co-worker better in a low stakes environment; the only thing that was uncomfortable was initially reaching out to schedule 10 minutes on her calendar as we didn ' t know each other very well. 3. Following the instructions in the textbook, arrange one 10-minute informational interview with a person in your workplace who is doing the type of work you are interested in doing. a. What was easy or fun about the informational interview? What was uncomfortable? It was fun learning about Deirdre ' s work history and how she landed in audit in the first place; however, it was definitely uncomfortable reaching out in the first place and scheduling a meeting with a direct supervisor.
