COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course is a required course for M.S. in Accountancy & Taxation Majors and a recommended course for CAP Students. The following are the objectives of this course: To develop your understanding of communication skills in accounting To develop strategies that will increase your effectiveness as a modern day accountant To communicate accounting information effectively to various stakeholders. To communicate the results of accounting issues in a written and oral form. To develop your written and oral communication skills through accounting cases and situation analysis. To develop your presentation skills through class presentations and the simulation of a real client setting To devel op your "Soft Skills" TOPICS COVERED: Communication soft skills for accountants Overview of the communication process Written communication of memos as well as short and long reports Oral presentations in different settings
GRADING: Final grades will be determined as a weighted average of scores of the assignments in this class, with the following weights: Written Assignment #1: THREE Executive Summaries of each section (Chapters 1- 6, Chapters 7-11, and Chapters 12-16) in Effective Writing: A Handbook for Accountants (30 points per Executive Summary) 90 points Written Assignment #2: Report on Emotional Intelligence 2.0 50 points Written Assignment #3: Report on Strictly Business Body Language: Using Nonverbal Communication for Power and Success 100 points Becoming a Texas CPA Report 100 Points In Class Presentation 10 points Revised Resume (You MUST MEET with Megan Bauml) 25 points Individual Presentation 100 Points Group Presentation 100 Points Total 575 Points Attendance is REQUIRED - more than three absences could result in a F in the class - attendance will be taken every class. Your final grade will be assigned as follows: 535 Points or higher A 445 to 459 Points C+ 518 to 534 Points A- 423 to 444 Points C 502 to 517 Points B+ 406 to 422 Points C- 479 to 501 Points B 349 to 405 Points D 460 to 476 Points B- Below 349 Points F INSTRUCTIONAL APPROACH This is a graduate communications hybrid course with both web based work and class presentations. It primarily focuses on soft skill development, and learning to give effective oral presentations and appropriate written assignments. The course progresses at a fast pace, demanding you to pace yourself appropriately to receive the maximum benefits from this experience. Total participation by students is expected in the form of discussing the materials covered in the textbook (in the form of class discussions and weekly homework exercise assignments), as well as, participating in presentations by subject experts, and in the presentations made by fellow students. Any incomplete or missed assignments will result in proportional reduction from your grade. Plan your activities and homework assignments accordingly and do not miss any deadlines. This is a "learn by doing class" -- you will be learning to communicate in writing as well as orally. You will be researching topics as part of the assignments/presentations and learning to communicate what you have learned. The subject-expert presentations are designed to enhance your Soft Skills - today's hard skills. You are expected to exhibit professional behavior throughout the course. MY PHILOSOPHY: We are in this together. You are giving us a number of opportunities to help you. It will be up to you to take advantage of them. My first "opportunity" is to help you learn as much as possible about this very in teresting subject/skill set as we can. If you do the work, you will receive a good grade and learn these career-making skill- sets. The question is, how can I help you earn a good grade (i.e. learn the material)? I cannot read the chapters for you nor do your work for you. You have to do that. I can, and will, however, provide
