CJ 210 Module One Practice Activity Template James Sena Answer each question below in 30 to 60 words by replacing the bracketed text with your responses. Be sure to cite any references in APA style . Purpose What is the purpose of a statement of need in a grant proposal? Characteristics What are the characteristics of an effective statement of need? Pitfalls What are some pitfalls that should be avoided when writing a statement of need? The statement of need is the part of a grant proposal that shows the potential funder why the project you are working on is important and why you need funding. It also tells the funder exactly what your nonprofit plans to do with the money and how you plan you do it . There are many characteristics of an effective statement of need, including correctly and efficiently outlining the needs, and goals, of the project you are requesting funding for. Making sure that everything is correctly laid out and described, and that the budget is added correctly are key points. You will want to provide data that corroborates with your claims and proof that your ideas will work and the impact that your project will have on the problem at hand. Of the pitfalls that should be avoided when writing a statement of need, one of the biggest is to make sure that, when writing your budget, you make sure that everything is accounted for, as you cannot go back and request more money after the fact. Also, making sure that your numbers are added correctly is important. Also, you want to make sure that you are giving the funders enough information about the project for them to make an informed decision- assuming the funders know the details of your project and not showing enough corroborating evidence to support your request could end up being one of the reasons your grant request is denied.
